Aanduveedal

Aanduveedal is a function observed on death anniversary of deceased ancestors.


Adachuthura

Adachuthura is a function connected with the marriage of Christians belonging to Thekkumbhagom. They used to sing a song known as Adachuthurappattu on the occasion.


Chathathirunal

Chathathirunal is the annual remembrance day of deceased performed by Marthoma Christians.


Dehna Thirunal

Dehna Thirunal is Epiphany celebrated on January 6th. The X’mas tree is to be kept till that day.


Kanon Niyamam (Kanon rules)

Kanon Niyamam is the social rules and regulations to be followed by Christians prescribed in 325 A.D.


Kettikettam (Reception of newly married couple)

Kettikettam is the reception of the newly married couple either at bride’s house or at the bridegroom’s house after the functions at the church.


Koodasa (sacraments)

Koodasa means holy sacraments followed by Christians. There are seven koodasas. They are:
(1) Jnanasnanam (Baptism), (2) Sthyrikaranam (Confirmation) (3) Kurbana (Eucharist), (4) Kumbasaram (Penance), (5) Vivaham (Marriage), (6) Pattom (Holy orders), and (7) Anthyakoodasa (extreme unction - anoint of the sick).


Kumbasaram (penance)

Kumbasaram is a ritual followed by those who have committed sins. They confessed before the parish priest on repentance. The priest is expected to keep such revelations as a secret. To make a private confession, a penitent enters the confessional box or room and, either kneeling or sitting, acknowledges all serious sins committed and expresses sorrow and a desire to repent. The priest then pronounces absolution and dismisses the penitent. He also suggests remedial measures to the sinner. The ritual has psychological effects and importance.

Nombu

Nombu is the penance followed by Christians. Anpathu (fifty) Nombu, Iruapathyanchu (twenty five) Nombu, Sleeha Nombu, Ettu (eight) Noyambu, Moonnu (three) Noyambu, Pathinanchu(fifteen) Nombu are the Noyambu observed by them.


Osana

Osana Perunnal is observed to commemorate the reception of Jesus by the people of Jerusalem. They carried tender leaves of palm tree and sung Hossanah, which means, “Oh Lord, save us”. In Kerala, Christians celebrate the festival on the Sunday previous to Easter. It is also known as Kuruthola Perunnal as the participants of the festival carry tender leaves of coconut palm. Othukalyanam (fixing of marriage)

This is a function in which marriage of Christians are fixed after obtaining the willingness of boy and girl. It is performed in the parish church belonging to the bride’s family. Parish priest obtains willingness of bride and bridegroom for marriage.


Pillayoonu

Pillayoonu is the first rice feeding ceremony observed by Christians. The priest of the parish church gives rice cooked in milk to the baby.
